Letter to Singapore
Dear Singapore,
I boarded the bus this morning a little earlier than usual. It was about 6.15am and the bus was jam-packed with people. I was minding my own business just trying to balance on my 2 feel while balancing my lap-top, workfiles and gymbag when a Thai song started playing- loud and clear. The man next to me fished out a phone belting out what must be a Thai hit-song and started jabbering away in Thai. My limited knowledge of Thai only revealed that he had something worth 200 dollars.
Anyhow, while I was eavesdropping desperately trying to recall the little Thai i picked up in uni, I realised that there were lots of folks on the bus who weren't Singaporeans. There were 2 nurses speaking in Tagalog, and a bunch of guys who (after eavesdropping further) were Bangladeshi construction worker. I was amazed, first that construction companies have gotten their construction worker to take the bus instead of providing transport (can you blame them? with rising transport and ERP costs?). But seriously, you've changed so much over the years. You have folks from all over the world working and living here. Some could already be PRs or even citizens. I guess I'm cool with that, I mean it adds so much more colour to our already vibrant society. It's just that I hope with all these people coming to Singapore, I still get to sit when i take the bus.
